Where a New Lenox Case Is Heard
New Lenox is in Will County, so criminal cases are filed and heard at the Will County Courthouse, 100 W. Jefferson Street in downtown Joliet — about fifteen minutes west of New Lenox — in the 12th Judicial Circuit. Cases are prosecuted by the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office. I am a former prosecutor in that system and a former Illinois Assistant Attorney General, and my office is in downtown Joliet, steps from the courthouse where your case will be called. I know how that office charges cases and how the judges who hear them run their courtrooms.
The Charges We See Most in New Lenox
New Lenox sits at the center of the Lincoln-Way communities, and a large share of the cases I handle here track its retail and highway corridors:
- Retail theft — 720 ILCS 5/16-25. The Lincoln Highway (Route 30) retail corridor, anchored by the big-box stores along it, generates a steady stream of retail-theft arrests. Even a first charge can damage employment prospects and a background check, and how it is resolved decides whether you can later expunge it. (See Retail Theft)
- Drug offenses — possession of a controlled substance under 720 ILCS 570/402, cannabis offenses, and paraphernalia. (See Drug Crimes)
- Domestic battery — 720 ILCS 5/12-3.2, often resting on a single account and carrying non-expungeable consequences. (See Domestic Battery)
- Weapons charges under 720 ILCS 5/24-1, and assault, battery, and disorderly conduct.
If your case involves drinking and driving, see my New Lenox DUI page — DUI runs on its own track with its own license deadline.
Traffic Stops on I-80 and Route 30
A great many New Lenox arrests begin on the road. I-80 runs along the northern edge of town with a heavy Illinois State Police presence, and Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) is a primary local patrol corridor, with the New Lenox Police Department and Will County Sheriff both active on the township roads. When a charge grows out of a traffic stop, the legality of that stop — and of any search that followed — is often the first and best place to attack the case.
Why a Former Prosecutor Helps Here
Knowing the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office from the inside changes how a defense is built. I can see early where a charging decision is weak, I know which cases the State will realistically reduce or dismiss, and I prepare every case to resolve favorably before trial when possible and to be ready for trial when it is not. For a New Lenox family or professional, the goal is the same: protect your record, your license, and your future.
